David Charles to join the department in 2014

September 16, 2013

David Charles, currently Senior Research Fellow at Oriel College, Oxford, will join the department in July 2014. Professor Charles is the author and editor of numerous books and articles on a wide range of topics, primarily in the thought of Aristotle. His book Aristotle on Meaning and Essence appeared in 2000. Most recently he edited, with Michael Frede, the volume Definition in Greek Philosophy. Charles also has interests in contemporary issues in philosophy of mind, intention, explanation and emotions. “One of my goals,” Charles says, “is to re-examine the way in which philosophers today understand experience as a purely psychological phenomenon which then needs to be reconnected with a purely physiological set of brain processes. My aim is to call into question the manner in which the mind/body question was originally set up by Descartes when he rejected the idea that experience was essentially psycho-physical in nature.”
