Past Event: MPWG: "Othering Vice"

Abstract: We call attention to a neglected phenomenon both in and outside of philosophy that we call 'othering vice', in which particular vices are conceptualized in terms of their most vivid or extreme manifestations. We present three “case studies” of the phenomenon, involving dishonesty, misogyny, and slurs as evidence and subsequently explain how othering vice functions as a form of ego protection, highlighting the many ways in which it impedes our moral development.
